Common Unity – Season Two
After a highly successful first edition, Common Unity is back for another iteration.
This project is my attempt at levelling the pay-gap from student to teacher via studio, by eliminating the middle step and, as a result, taking on a bit more personal risk by hiring a space so I can teach the way I want - extended practices with lots of space for pranayama, a slower paced vinyasa with more time to break down certain postures and transitions, and a proper shavasana.
Full disclosure, I’ve had to increase the class price slightly from the last edition (from £20 to £25 - still the cheapest 2hr class in London) as I just about broke even on the last season. T-shirts are still £20, you still get a free tee if you attend all four classes, and classes are now limited to 16 spots.

What’s the point?
It’s hard being a full-time yoga teacher; last year with the events industry quiet and struggling for work, I forcibly dipped my toe into working as a teacher for 10 months. In that time I taught around 700+ hrs worth of classes, including workshops, retreats and 1:1s.
At the end of this stint, I found myself physically depleted, and with very little financial reward to show for it.
Some studios pay well and add a bonus for busy classes, but that’s rare. And the ones that do are probably not the ones you’re thinking of. There is definitely a pay gap in the wellness world and teachers are burning out because of it.
So, this is the solution I’ve come up with. It’s my most ambitious project yet and I’m 100% shitting it, but nothing ventured nothing gained.
And what better way than to commit to being seen than by doing it with a the brightest neon t-shirt available 😂

Financially I’m taking a risk, emotionally I’m taking a risk because the scopophobia is real, but I’m excited to explore teaching in a sustainable way: directly to my community, for my community. For you. Because without each other, in the grand scheme we’re fucked.
